Thank you so much for this simple little tid-bit of information!!!, Let me explain to you how you're two sentence response saved my mom a lot of money.

Kerreth -> Re(2):EGC-1 Problem after upgrade.

My mother's furnace quit working so she called a repairman to come over yesterday and I just happened to be here because she couldn't be available. She left me a blank check and told them that I could authorize any repairs. The guy showed up and when he saw that it was a Lennox, he told me that he used to be a salesman for the largest Lennox sellers in the area. He opened it up, showed me that the electronic air filter needed cleaned and that was part of the problem and told me how to clean it. Then he turned the furnace off and on a few times, and prodded it with a multimeter and about a half hour later he said it needed a new "computer". When I looked at the furnace I didn't see any "computers", just a simple circuit board with basic components labeled EGC-1. I asked him how he knew that it was the computer and he started mumbling off something about 400 volts and the flame sensor and yada yada but he didn't really answer my question. I didn't tell him this but I have a pretty strong electronics background and I could tell he was just trying to talk over my head and he thought by saying 400 volts, that would shut me up. He said
Lennox's are great furnaces but the problem with them is that their parts are proprietary and expensive. He said he needed to go out to his van and call on the prices for parts so he could get a quote. When he came back, he was very reluctant to show me the quote and wanted my mom's work number. I asked him how much the quote was got a glimpse of the quote sheet. He said that the "computer" would cost $400 and "they" also suggested replacing the flame sensor which was an additional $180 plus labor for a total of over $660. I told him my mom couldn't afford that right now but I gave him the number anyway and sent him on his way.

So today I was thinking, if I could find those parts for cheaper than he said they cost, I could do the repairs myself. I typed "EGC-1" into Google and stumbled upon this message thread. It took me about an hour or so of fumbling around with improper tools but eventually I got the flame sensors out and PM'ed them and reinstalled everything. (I might add that I found these sensors on the internet for $40-$90... not $180!) I fired the sucker up it worked like a charm and now the house is nice a cozy.

The question I have now is, was the repair guy trying to rip us off? If used to sell Lennox and now he repairs them, shouldn't he know that the flame sensors are prone to low flame current problems and that a simple PM will cure the problem? I even told my mom yesterday before I tried to fix it myself that I felt like the guy was trying to rip her off and that $660 seemed pretty crazy. So should I call the BBB or his supervisor and report this or just let it go and hope the next guy that he bills $600 is really getting what he needs?

Anyway, thanks again for the help. Ain't the internet great?!

I am not kidding when I tell you this is the most useful Web site I have ever run across!

As an HVAC Mechanic, you know how scary it can be when the furnace doesn't run in the middle of winter...and to have this resource available (24 by 7) to get it running again...was a "GodSend", as they say!  Just having those Forums available is a big, big help!).  I'm a believer, and the money you saved me on a house call alone is worth it!  Not to mention, I can now talk intelligently with the dealer/distributor about the problems this furnace has!

An interesting sidelight, and one of those "It's a small world".  I work for a small manufacturing division as a PC Team leader, providing on-site support for about 800 employees.  Yesterday, l was getting a soda out of the vending machine, and a lady engineer came up to where I was standing and said, "I hear you're having trouble with your furnace!".  Since I was out of the office all last week at a training class, I asked how she knew that, and she said, "My husband works for the Carrier Distributor as a "QA person", and he got a copy of your email that you sent off to Carrier Customer Service.  It sounds like you are pretty unhappy with your furnace!".  When I replied, "Ahh, yes, but thanks to HVACMechanic.com, I'm now a lot smarter about what is wrong with this thing, and I think it is a combination of product quality AND installation techniques...I'm not ruling anything out, at this point"...she just raised her eyebrows as if to say, "Hmm, this sounds like I'd better tell my husband to get on this!".

Anyway, thanks again...the furnace has been running fine since I installed the drain loop, and I have no more worries!

You were right, it was a contact problem.  I can't express enough how much help this site and you have been.  I called at least one dozen HVAC companies locally and none wanted to give me any advice over the phone. I work for a large corporation and I will make sure I spread the word about your site.  I will be making a donation to this site, because people need helpful sites like this.

Thanks again.

On city water, with not enough pressure.  Spent an hour taking apart the water
valve. Even though this was a new unit, it sat in the box for a few years
before I got around to installing it. The screen on the water input side of
the valve seemed to be causing the problem. Cleaned it with a little water
and air, and we were good to go.  Thank you very, very much for such
excellent advice and support. This is the best advice site I have ever
found - really
!

bulletI want to thank the Xenos (webmaster) for posting his response to Clare -
you saved my bacon.  It was Christmas eve with a house full of people and it
was getting cold - the furnace would not ignite.  I have the same furnace
install about the same year as Clare.  Didn't take too long to figure the
air proving switch was not operating.  The message about the switch tubing
being clean was the key.  While the tubing was clear the orifice in the
flare fitting that attaches to the metal box (fire box?) was blocked.  Used
a drill bit to clean the fitting orifice and whala!!!  Thanks

Thank you Xenos, you probably saved me $150.  I had the same problem and
once I figured out where the heck the flame rod was it fixed it.  I will
monitor it over the next few days but it is much warmer in here right now.
It suppose to get down to 18 tonight so it comes at a great time.    Thanks
again!!!

I wish I had waited for your response. I had an extra control module (new) so I installed that first. Then after 3 hours of manual reading I found the part where it said to clean the flame sensor-lo and behold-just finished putting the cover on and we have heat.
Thanks for the prompt reply. My 3 girls will sleep well tonight. (wife and 2 daughters)

It's about 36F right now(outside temp) up here in Canada and we've been without heat for 2 days(60F inside) as I've been too stubborn to shell out the 100 bucks for a service repairman. Finally had the time to troubleshoot tonight and glad I waited.

By the way, how do you mean (sand) the flame rod? All I did was wipe it with a cloth....

A little cold adventure never hurt anyone.

bullet Thank you for this site. I am a single mom of three who bought her dream home 1 1/2 ago. It has a heating and cooling system from 1976. I know it will have to be replaced soon but I was hoping to get through one more summer. When it stopped working today with a heat index of over 100 degrees I saw major dollar signs just to get someone out here. Before I started calling around I visited your site. By following some of the simple recommendations on the trouble shooting page I got it back up and running with no expense. Thank you again and again.
