This is a very good question, the answer is a very complicated and if you are serious about working in this area worth the effort as you will become an added value employee to your company. Bacteria, fungus and corrosion can cause serious damage to equipment and to people. Energy costs could also rise should the proper treatment not be carried out. I would caution that unless you know what you are doing leave this to the experts. Usually specialty companies also carry insurance to cover problems should they occur.
Briefly, the treatment process partially depends on the facility location (city – country) as water hardness will depend on the type of treatment needed. Amount and type of chemicals needed, amount of bleed off needed all depend on many factors like evaporation rates, flow and load. I would recommend at this time to contact your local collage or the specialty company that is doing your service at this time and ask bout courses that are available.
Hopefully I have been some help
