"Trane Packaged system Thermostat Question" , posted Fri 5 Mar 13:33user profileedit/delete messagepost reply

My company is looking to move to a new building that uses Trane rooftop units. We would like to use a third party building management system we already own to control the units.

The building management system uses standard Y/G/W/R/etc dry contact thermostats, but the Trane units use what appears to be a proprietary thermostat which connect on both the tstat and unit end with terminals numbered 1-5. I know these thermostats are designed to work directly with the microprocessor inside the units, but is there any type of "cheater board" or other such signal adapter I can use to provide basic functionality (Fan, Cool, Heat 1, Heat 2) so I can use this management system?

Thanks in advance.

Yes Trane sells an interface module for this reason.

Wonderful.

I am certainly not going to ask to dig up a part number of anything, but is there any sort of description or otherwise? I've been searching the Internet like crazy and I can't find any information on it. I'm sure if I knew even the correct name for it or where to find one I could take care of the rest myself.

Thanks for your help so far.

I would recommend contacting Trane with your units model number and make sure your sitting down. LOL.

Yeah, I figure it's gonna be really expensive.

I've already done some dissecting and found out how to switch the fan by shorting terminals. I figure that if I can determine fixed resistor values for the temperature setpoint sliders then I might be able to use a relay toggling between two values for the varister that "reads" the temperature and home brew and interface board.

Regardless, I certainly want to check out the "right" way to do it.

Thanks for your help man.

If the units are Voyagers, you'll need a CTI(Conventional Thermostat Interface). If the units are Precedents, you'll need nothing additional. The CTI is built into the control board.

God is great!

Trane parts center offered to sell me BRD-968 at $110 to interface the Voyager to Conventional Thermostat.
I may still buy it.
