I am trying to replace an old (1995)trane thermostat for a trane YCD090C3LOBE rooftop unit with a programmable ICM 3801 thermostat. There are no model or serial #'s on the old thermostat. There are number designations 1 - 5 on the old thermostat instead of "R-G-Y-W-B." The unit is a 7 ton downflow with 2-stage gas heat. I know where R-G-Y are supposed to go. I thought W was for heat, what the heck is blue- common? I tried blue for 2nd and first stage heat and for a common, but the thermostat is dead. Any suggestions?

im not sure of the trane mod but i have aways had good luck looking at the unit and wires to see where they go this can be a pain but its never failed me yet due to interlocking cir in most of the com. units.

If the terminal strip on the unit has numbers like 1 through 20 then you need a special thermostat. I think it's a Trane model BAYSENS019B. They also have an interface board that allows you to use any 2-stage thermostat with that unit. If the unit has a regular terminal strip with R,Y,W,G,etc. then the blue-common may not be needed on the new thermostat. Common is the other side of the 24 volt transformer. If it touches any of the terminals you'll blow the fuse or transformer on the unit.

Keep Cool!
