I have a 4-valve gage and I want to check the charge of a heat pump. The only problem is that there are to many choices. I understand that the suction line is the large dia. copper line and that the small dia. copper line is the high pressure side. Which acces valves do i connect my hoses and what should they read?

Hmmmm.. If I were you, I would not mess around with it. It is not a toy, especially when the refrigerant spraying out from the highside. A frost bite is just as bad as a high temperature burn.
If something is working, then leave it alone.

Do a search for basic refrigeration cycle and charging.

P.S. it's not a pressure thing but a pressure temperature thing.

I've searched the web for the refrigeration cylce and came up with the same question. On a HP there are three access valves? You use two of them depending on the current cylcle of the pump, This particular pump is in the cooling mode. If you connect to the wrong two it will abviously give you the wrong readings. I understand tat in order to find out the correct charge of a system other than a HP you would use superheat calculations (freon temp/press minus suction line temp). Any help would be appreciated.

well the red is the liquid line (3/8) and suction is blue(3/4,7/8,or larger) hook them up like that and it depends on if its in heating or cooling that determines the pressures.when in heating the suction line is hot and the liquid line is almost the same.in cooling reversing valve kicks in and suction becomes cold and liquid becomes hot .pssst..the secret is the reversing valve ..good luck.
