Can I replace a mercury switch BDP model #P271-3456 similar to the Goodman/Janitrol model #HPT18-60 are these thermostats comparable 2 stage heat & 1 state cool? I can't find any literature on these models(4-wires only G=Fan relay / Y=Compressor relay / B=1st stage Heat / R=24vac return) upgrade to digital programable type either LUX model #PSPH605 or Carrier model #33CS250-01 The Carrier wiring diagram shows 6 wires. Is there any jumpering I need to do? for C=24vac common or W2=2nd stage Heat? Or is there something you can suggest?
Keep asking until you figure it out! Take it one attempt at a time.

4 wire thermostat is not a dual stage thermostat.
remote thermostat which has two stage heat and one stage cool is design specifically for the heat pump system with more efficiency and Auxilliary heat add to the system.
what i recommend u is study the schemetic from ur system b4 u change the thermostat.. otherwise bad connection will have faulty performance
study for hvacr bs degree

break it down a little more. what type of unit(s) are you trying to operate? How many wires are at the existing stat? what are they hooked to?
