I believe the purpose of a steam humidifier is to dry out your wallet, they cost alot of money. They are supposed to do a superior job of humidifing by directly introducing water vapor to the air stream and not by evaporation like most humidifiers. There are also atomizing humidifiers which mist water into the airstream, but they are problematic. My main concern with atomizing and steam humidifiers is condensation in the ductwork if everything isn't just perfect and that causes rust.
