some of these little pieces of jap-crap like the one you're describing have the metering device in the condensing unit. this means that your liquid line will be about as cold as your suction line and any rules of thumb about A/C you're familiar with get tossed out the window.

the most common problem I've encountered with these units is a fixed orifice installed at the evaporater that wasn't needed because it had a TXV in the condensing unit already, or the line drier installed backwards, or the orifice installed backwards. starting to get the picture?? get the book out and find out what these dog-eaters are trying to accomplish, and make sure the job was done right in the first place. otherwise, you may find out you've just been pissing in the wind. Good Luck.

is the suction freezing coming out of the evap section also,do a visual on the inside of the A coil section, and check the rounds of the fan section, sounds like air is missing someplace if there is dirt on those rounds air will be slower to be picked up and sent out of the evap causing ice to run down the suction and into the compressor section.if you have ice only at the compressor suction might be a charge problem but still it should show on that run out from the evap?wrap some news paper around the condenser during the run and see if the ice disappears,or a garbage can cover on top to raise the head pressure for say 5 minutes then remove.

It ain't going to get any lighter looking at it!

like the post above me say you must like a low charge or there is a restriction some where. Check your condenser from dirt see if there is a restriction on Airflow. Good luck.
