I do hvac maintinance work for a company with about fifty units all american standard. One of the 5 ton units in heating mode has a really bad smelling flue gas .I mean make your eyes water bad This unit is natural gas .I am new to hvac field and never came across this problem any help or direction where to start looking would be great. THANKS

Sound like a call for a complete cleaning job as well as a good leak and pressure check on the gas side.

check manifold press, too much gas will smell rotten,it will burn eyes and nasal passages

What you maybe smelling is soot burning off. I would have someone with you and go check out the heat exchanger of smelly pipe. It may reveal alot to you, i.e. cracked, plugged or just plain sooty.
