I have a 16 year old Miller cmf 80-po oil furnace which currently stopped working. The last time I had it serviced the tech said it had a crack in the burner plate but was no emergency at the time to replace it. Since I heat mostly with my wood stove I let it go for two years. Now that it crapped out, Instead of servicing again I'm resolved to having it replaced. I'm wondering generally what is the life expectancy of my unit and if there is a better quality product that will install with little modification to the ducting etc. Thanks< Steve

well what can one say, except one gets what they pay for.
Most good oil furnaces will last over 25 yrs and if your cooling coil isn;t installed or the filters maintained properly, that lifespan will drop down a bit.
most re & re furnace jobs require very little ductwork changes, UNLESS your existing ductwork is undersized or doesn't meet current code requirements.
You have to keep that in mind, so if the contractors who come by to qoute on the furnace replacement say you need some ductwork modifications, don't get too bent out of shape about it, but question exactly why they are saying that.

No matter how idiot proof you make something better idiots will always try and screw around with it!
