I have a armstrong heatpump unit in a 900 sq ft commercial building. It is a 3 ton unit.I have it ducted into the building with 8 registers and 1 12 inch return. My problem is ..over the past month the unit has been shutting down on its own.It throws a 60 amp disconnct located inside the unit housing. The disconnect operates the 3 heat strips. The freon level is right, the filter cleaned on a weekly basis, located inside a housing in the building.I can disconnect one of the heat strips and it will no longer throw the disconnect. It is blowing out 110 degree air when it is operating in cold weather.. below freezing mostly. The heat pump condensing unit occasionly has a thin layer of ice on it but when it goes into defrost, it quickly is gone. The line on the 60 amp is pulling 46.3 amps.So the disconnect is not over loaded.I have replaced the trermostat, replaced the filter, checked to make sure the heat coils are not burnt into, tightened the wires going into the and out of the disconnect. This problem just started about a month ago....anyone want to throw some ideas out?? I have had several ac repair guys here.. to no avail....

Have a great day

if it worked with a 60 amp breaker, why not try a new breaker?

we are all in it together and none of us will ever get out of it alive.

for 1 if your return air is only 12" round, this is inadiquet for right amount of return, add more. how every, i believe your heating elements at 240v divided into total watts 3 x 5000w., probable 5kw each? = 62 amps, notcounting blower motor 4 to 6 amps more. if information is correct, your breaker & your wire to furnace is not large enough. you may attempt disconnecting one element & see how 10kw.[2] 5kw elements heats. your home. if it does then leave electrical alone & either change heater package or completely disable 3rd element so nobody can reconnect & experience the same issues. check all electrical connections, total amp draws, contactors, etc. and increase your return air. let me know if this helps. antonetz r.p.
