Dear fellows:
I just recently finish the installation of some ductless mini split systems in a local elementary school. Everything working fine so far. But now school board members are worried about flu transmission due to air recycling. Any suggestions on how to provide some sanitation besides proper unit maintenace ?
Thanks!!

On your next school project consider using a "Change Air" HRV c/w spit cooling option. These units monitior IAQ co levels, have a heat pipe for heat recovery and can use hot water/steam/electric or gas heating to provide room heat. I can provide you pdf copies of some of the data sheets I have if your interested, as I have installed close to 100 of these units in 18 schools to date. (mostly portapaks attached to a main pod)
No matter how idiot proof you make something better idiots will always try and screw around with it!

Here in PA ventilation and air balancing are a major part of commissioning a new hvac system. There are a number of lawsuits relating issues of mold. Read the comments about Walter Reed Hospital in D.C. These are real issues and can be addressed with an air-to-air heat exchanger for a smaller application like yours. Many school buildings here are designed to provide outside to vav boxes or heatpumps in closets in each classroom. I'm a fan of the mini splits, but fresh air can be an issue.
