We have several 4 ton Trane rooftop heat pumps where I work, mostly model WSC048A3R___. Being heat pumps, the outside coils freeze up in lower temps with high humidity. Half of them don't defrost. They use the ReliaTel Control system (temp on/temp off). When defrosted, the charge in the system is in line; we've replaced the "silver bullet" outside air and evaporator sensors; we've even swapped boards. If put in test, the defrost mode works like a charm. The units are linked to an Alerton DDC EMS, but that shouldn't matter. What am I missing?
I'm cool when it's hot.

If the units are working in the test mode as you said what could be affecting all the units? What is connected to all the units? Unless you have several units with a common problem (which is possible)look for a common demoninator (EMS?). How are the units being controlled ? Get a copy of the EMS control sequence and check it for yourself. If the Test mode controls the unit the problem is most likely from the outside controls. AS a check, unhook the EMS from one or two units and see if the problem goes away.
All refrigerants are safe - All refrigerant are dangerous. The difference is YOU !!!
