what do i need to know when changing rubber pump couplings?
is it as simple as loosening the set screws, removing the old couplings, and using a straight edge to verify the alignment?

its not as simple as just using a straight edge to align. we use a shaft alignment tool that uses 2 dial indicators. get it within a few thousandths of an inch and youll be OK. usually takes me an hour or two and alot of patience to properly align.

If you are changing the rubber coupling you should verify alignment while you are there. It will be much cheaper than changing a seal or bearing.
