I have a 10 ton lennox rooftop. outside temp is 75 went to the roof to see if compressors were operating. indoor temp is 79. set the thermostat to 66 to see if 2nd stage compressor comes on. I noticed that the the 2 nd stage did come on but the the first stage compressor was recycling. it would run 5 - 10 minutes and then shut off for 1 minute. IS THIS NORMAL?
have a great day

I have books from 25 years ago covering DMS units. I took a 3 day course. Contact me. echc@on.aibn.com

the first stage shouldn't be cycling till the setpoint is made on that stat, and the 2nd stage should be on with the room at that temp.it could be a time delay that is keeping the 2nd stage off ....concentrate on that 1st circuit then go to the 2nd one .
It ain't going to get any lighter looking at it!

On multi stage package units each circuit usually runs independent of each other sounds like one stage is off on a safety-low pressure or high pressure switch and the other might be low on freon going off on low pressure switch then system pressure equalizes closing switch and restarting compressor until pressure drops thus opening switch repeating cycle.Check freon in both and indoor fan motor and condensor motors. Also check low voltage circuit to make sure t-stat is calling for 2nd stage it should be but I have seen stranger things happen.
