I have a job on a commerrcial building that has five package units on the roof, the roof is about to get redone by a roofing company. The problem is they had the city come out to look at the job before they started and they said all the drain lines need to be done in copper. They also said they have to drain into a approved plumbing fixture and not just down the roof drain. What options do I have? Either I install a drain line for all five of them into one big drain or just go with each of there own drain into a sink down below. This city is in anaheim california. I guess I need to call the city to find out first.

I know in DC your inside hvac units you have to have copper condensate due to fire code and piped into roof drain line but as far as rooftops I dont know why they need copper condensate unless they are worried about uv rays eating away at pvc pipe? Good luck

They don't want it ran in pvc because of the uv rays. I dont mind it being ran in copper but where he wants it ran to is the problem. why can't it just drain down the raingutter?

Never heard of that in my life. I hope I would never have to do something like that. I install aprox 200 rtu a year and just install traps. Is this an hvac inspector or building inspector.

this is a building inspecter all the condensate drains need to drain in a approved plumbing fixture.{ a sink, floor drain}. He said the drains can't drain into the downspout from the roof. where eles are you going to drain it to then?

I would love to see that code. If he can not show you the code I would ask him for an order to comply.

Yeah the inspectors in that city are all crazy . I'm going to ask him to show me where in the code book it say's that you can't drain the drains down the downspout of the building.

Most cities will not let you run condensate down rain gutters these days.
Next time you see slime growing across a sidewalk, ally or parking lot check the source. Odds are someone is draining their condensate off the roof and down a downspout.
