we have Arco Aire 10 Ton unit where we are being told that the condensing coils are deteriorated beyond repair. Temporary repairs have been made...the unit continues to trip off on high head and is only operational at 1/2 cooling capacity. They are also recommending that condensing unit be replaced..The proposal was to replace and install a York 10 ton condensing unit.
Can someone tell me what they mean by "trip off on high head"?

Hi, that unit has the dreaded "split" condensor. Having 2 condensors slapped up against one another. Both sides may be clean but completely plugged between. Get a contractor to split the coil, and powerwash, as long as its not overcharged you should see radical improvement.

I would agree with jo jo..what they mean by tripping on high head is that the unit is going off on a safety device called a pressure switch wich is there to protect yore system from a compresor failure.Condenser coils are used to cool off the refriderant thru fans drawing air thru the coils..If coils are plugged with dirt,cottonseed,etc. air cannot pass thru to cool.YOU also said this was a two stage system ,meaning two compressor and two condensor fanmotors???? Are both fan motors running? How does the condenser coil look. If it looks pretty beat up then it may be time to replace the unit.. whats the age of the system?

LOL, Sounds like they are just trying to sell you an expensive component that you might not need.Try calling another service company to come and clean the condensers and do a PM.
