My son goes to karate at a school in Union NJ they have been having problems with the Ac unit for several years . Ive always assumed the AC unit needed to be replaced . But today I got out of work early so I picked up my kids and toock them to karate early. when i got there the HVAC guys where there working on the unit I seen the Grand Masters wife begging the guys to check the unit on the roof because the wanted to leave So I went over and asked the guy what they had done to fix the problem.they told me they had change a filter. I told them their was no air pressure coming out of the system. they went on the roof hung out for a while came down changed the filter once again said they level of a line and came out with bill 569.00 and said he needed to come back for 495.00 to power wash the coil please advise Im a plumber not HVAC

dirty evaporator coil means less airflow, and rooftop units are a pain to clean because everything has to be carried up,as far as them charging the customer and the system no better that's not good business.

I'm not sure I understand the question but it sounds like the a/c was never serviced or maintained. The fact that you said "they have been having problems with the Ac unit for several years" suggests that it has been neglected. Systems in this condition can take a long time to clean and to restore it to normal condition. Time is money.

They have had the unit service every year by this same company . they are Korean and their English is not very good. I think they are being taken advantage of. I dont think you charge someone unless you fix the problem . It runs right now the same way it did prior to them checking it and working on it. If I came to fix a problem with your plumbing and when I left and handed you the bill It was the same way as when I arrived . I would be ripping you off. My question is whether power washing the coil makes any sense to you or anyone else Thanks

Yes, coils do need to be washed. If dirty then that supports my theory of a long term lack of maintenance. If they really "serviced the unit" every year then the coils would be clean.
It's more likely that they were called for a service call every year, at which time they changed the dirty filter and neglected to clean the coils which are now schmegged. Maybe they've been schmegged for years. These guys are probably hackers, I would never let a coil get out of control like that.
