ONe of our many 5 ton units failed (freezing around the pipe cap outside). The HVAC guy who came out says we have an restriction in the upflow coil (24") (which is over heating the compressor and shutting down the system) and we need a new one.

Esimate $2100 to replace it, fill it up with gas.

Had everything serviced some months ago but my regular HVAC guy recently passed away from cancer - and I don't know this company and first time through the door am presented with a $2100 estimate, so am a little worried.

Any insights - he says he is sure I need a new coil!

Call someone else. Ask friends and neighbors who they recommend. Most restrictions that are in your system are either in the metering device or drier and can be repaired.

In saying that, if your unit is 13 - 15 years old. It may be wise to replace everything, otherwise you can be nickle and diming the thing to dealth from now to eternity.

Hope this helps.
