I recently tried to upgrade my thermostat and when I hooked the new one up it stayed on for about five seconds then shut off. I put the old one back on and still no power. I looked for a fuse inside my furnace but could not locate it, or the control board. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

If you see no in-line fuse, usually 3 or 5 amp plug-in on the main control board, you might not have one. Need to check the transformer. If you have a volt meter, check for 24v on the secondary side of the transformer. If you got 24v and 24v common shorted you might have fried the transformer of PC board. At the t-stat, jumper R to G. If the indoor fan runs, the transformer is working.

What exactly do you mean by "jumper R to G"? I know about wiring, I'm just not familiar with the term "jumper"

Create an electrical short between R and G, possibly with the aid of a piece of wire.
"Tip of the Day" Remember to remove power first.
