I work at a private school. On our middle school we have some 2 1/2 ton carrie package units. Recently a couple of the units started leaking water down the supply and return ducts into the class room. We thought they had plugged evap coils and the fans were pulling the water off the coils into the cabinet. We completely cleaned the coils and they are good. we also pulled the drain pans out and filled them up with wated to check for cracks and leaks but they are ok. The units are a litted old and some of the insulation is missing inside the cabinets maybe they are condensating and draining down the ducts. The pressures seem fine and the coils are not icing up. Any suggestions from any one ? we are kind of running out of ideas why the units are doing this.

Make sure you have p-traps installed on the outside of the units. Also make sure that the units are sitting level on their curbs. (fill the condensate pans with water and make sure it doesn't pool up at the opposite end from the drain.) Make sure the thermostats aren't set too low, causing freeze-ups.
You should be able to see where the water is coming from when it is leaking. If it was a condensation problem it would be pretty obvious.
It's only a shock if your not expecting it!
