OK, question for the guru's. History: Heil HHP030AKA1, frosts up to beat the band and never lets go of it. Replaced the defrost control board with an ICM304, which is a direct replacement for the stock ICP1069364. Re-installed as per original wiring, then checked book to make sure it was in correctly when first installed. Still frosts/ices to 1/2" - 1" and won't go into defrost. My last thing to check before I call the local guy is the defrost sensor. My question: Is there anyway to test the defrost sensor? Is it just a normal bi-metal pop disk that when it see's temp it snaps open/closed? I get to tackle this when I get home, but if there's anything else you guys could help with, please feel free. I'd be more than appreciative!
Thanks

Jim Miller

I have no access to Heil support so I don’t know what system you have. However a sensor/ thermostat is used to start a defrost cycle. Yes it may be just a snap disk or it could be a thermister. If it’s a snap disk just jump it out and see if it defrosts during the next timing cycle.

Xenos.

The best way to escape a problem is to solve it.

I appreciate the help. I'll give it a shot. Worst I can do it break an already broken system. I'll take the gauges home tonight and see what they're doing. It heats just fine when it's clean, and cools like a big dog. I'll just do one step at a time.
Seems like no-one has Heil support. I can't even get it from the local guys. They want $80hr to check it out, and that's while it's still under warranty (2yrs left) as they're too busy. I called one guy in the spring, but he said he was too busy.
So, you buy a book, you ask for the help of friends and you do it your self. If it's reversing valve, I'll be polishing my skills on brazing/silvering again.
Thanks again.

OK. That was easy. Made a jumper, put it across the terminals (disconnected the sensor, and replaced it with the jumper) and she defrosted just fine. I've tried it 3 times, and I'm free of ice. Looks like I'll be replacing the sensor on Monday. Anyone need a like new defrost control cheap?

Thanks for the reply and the info. Don't take this wrong, but I hope I don't have to post again for a long time:-)

If you wish you can replace the demand defrost with a time temp defrost that works well and eliminates the demand sensor that your having trouble with.

Replaced it already, but thanks. Now to quiet an extremely noisy, vibrating compressor. Damn Heil crap. Just over 3 years old, never again.
