I had 2 York Heat Pump Systems installed into a new home I am building in Culpeper County. I chose Heat Pumps in an effort to save money on the monthly heating and cooling costs. The duct work and placement of the systems looks great but when it came time for the guys to wire everything up it seemed there was a lot of confusion and I am not so sure it was done correctly.

Also having never lived in a home that uses Heat Pumps I am finding their operation to be strange and this leaves me wondering if the systems are functioning properly. For instance:

1. Both systems larger copper line (the one covered in black foam) "gurgle" and sound as though there are air bubbles traveling within the pipes.
2. Both systems cycle 5 minutes on then 5 minutes off (approx.) to maintain the 60 degree thermostat setting. The Thermostat never drops below 60 or goes above 60 during these cycles. (by the way 60 degrees is what I have the system set at). This fast cycling and the Temp never changing is quite different than what I am used to with the current gas system in my previous home.
3. The smaller system, the one upstairs, seems to be calling on the auxiliary heat about 30 to 60 seconds into it's ON cycle just to maintain the 60 degree setting. I suppose out of all the issues this one bothers me the most. I would think that the heat pump without the auxiliary heat should be able to maintain 60 degrees when the outside temp is only 35 degrees. The larger system, the one downstairs, only calls for auxiliary heat when I move the thermostat setting up a few degrees, it does not call for auxiliary heat to maintain a temp like the one upstairs.
4. These are also supposed to be multispeed Air handlers (N1VSB1206A) but it seems to me that the speed of air coming from the vents is always the same.

Here is how both systems are wired:

Thermostats:
G - Green
C - Black
R - Red
W1 - Jumped to Y
Y - Yellow
L - Blue
W2 - Brown and Jumped to E
E - Jumped to W2 (stated Above)
B - Empty
O - Orange

Air Handlers:
R - Red x2
Y - Yellow x2
G - Green from Thermostat only
W2 - Brown x2
W1 - White from outside unit only
O - Orange x2
C - Black x2
2 Blue Wires are wire nutted together and not connected to Air Handler

Outside Unit
Unit Wire color - Wire from Air Handler
White - White
Orange - Orange
Black - Black
Yellow - Yellow
Purple - Blue
Gray - Nothing
Brown - Brown
Red - Red

I forgot to get the jumper settings of the smaller unit upstairs, but here are the jumper settings of the Air Handler downstairs:
Cool - A
Heat - A
Adj - B
Delay - D
Heat Pump - Off
Humidistat - On

Thanks for your assistance in this matter. I just want to have a reliable and properly functioning system, and the fast cycling, the gurgling, the Auxiliary heat and the non-changing air speed issues are really bothering me. Mostly the Auxiliary Heat issue, because I am stressed that I will be in for a HUGE electric bill.

The bad news is I have no access to York’s support it’s dealer protected. I can tell you this the cycle rate is being controlled from the thermostat and I feel it’s incorrectly set as well your Aux heating on the one unit doesn’t sound correct either. Both of these issues may be just the thermostat set up.

What is the make and model of the thermostat’s

First off, I would like to thank you for taking the time to assist me.

Now, as far as the thermostats go, they say York on them, but I believe they are rebadged Honeywell T8411 Units. I will have to swing by the new house to be absouluteluy sure, but looking at the pictures on the web, it appears to be the correct one.

If it is this thermostat the cycle rate for first stage heating and cooling is fixed at 3cph. However since yours is running at 6 something sounds strange I would express your concerns with them and have them have a look at it.
