I have a RUUD 4-ton condensing unit (10 SEER) mounted outside the master bedroom. While inside the home at the master bedroom and the unit cycles on it sounds "very noisy." To me the sound could be best described as a sound like a jack hammer. I've had the unit checked by a HVAC contractor who says all is well but I am not pleased with the high noise level. RUUD/RHEEM boast about copland-compliant scroll compresors which are quiet but I wanted to ask if this sounds like an acceptable noise level. The refrigerant lines run from the condensing unit into the wall up to tha a/c unit on the second floor of the home.

Any suggestions on what to have checked or how to quiet the condensing unit down are greatly appreciated.

The compressor is much louder than the fan unit. If I were to troubleshoot pressures and temps to determine if system is operating properly, where would I do that?

You would have to have a set of refrigeration gauges and conect them to the system.

pressure readings are 225 psig and 85 psig. Outside temp was approximately 80 deg. System is R-22.

I had a mechanical contractor check the system. He said all looks fine and recommended installing a seperate split unit to cool lower level of home is about 1500 SF and upper level is about 700SF. I'd prefer to see if I can trouble shoot the two-zone system to see if I can get the upstairs to cool better and the compressor to not be as loud before going the route of having a second system installed.

Out side unit sounds like a jack hammer, it’s only 80 out side and the back pressure is 85. I feel something is not right. And it’s related to the compressor, I would love to know if it’s drawing the rated load amps and what the sub cooling is.

I have no idea what is noisy to your or not. All I can say is that the compressor is normally not as loud as the fan.
