24v at condensor relay and to the top of the contactor, i think
the common is missing to complete this circuit, that is why i am looking for a schematic

How are you getting 24 vac then. are you using ground or something?

24vac to yellow and common, comming from thermostat; and thru to the relay and a 24vac wire to top of the contactor but no common. this is the reson the thermostat calls for the contactor
to close but not start the compressor. it appears the contactor is missing a wire to activate the magnetic switch on the contactor.

There are just 2 wires in a condensing unit, Power comes directly from Y on the thermostat and common comes directly from the furnace.

that is correct.... the contactor is not closing due to a missing
wire, the common? and shouldn't the common wire go to the opposit
pole on the contactor terminal to the magnetic coil winding to complete this circuit?

is a "common" the second wire comming from the furnace? if
so can that be placed to the magnetic field terminal on
the opposit side of the contactor. no, there is a loose black
wire that has always been taped back. my ac man says he cannot repair this unit and suggests replacement of the entire system
due to it's age. i have to stuggle thru this summer before that option can be considered. i am now holding the contactor closed to keep the house cool and manually cycling this unit until a resolve can be realized. please email me a "typical" contactor
wiring schemeatic to clgiaimo@yahoo.com I appreciate very much your time today.

As mentioned earlier, there should be 2 control wires one Y and the other C. Power and common. C comes from the furnace Y from the thermostat.

Technically yes, but connect it where the wires enter the unit as there may be safeties controls in the unit that are inline wit that wire and bringing the line right to the contactor will by pass them.
