Greetings,
My local HVAC guy installed an Amana Air Command 80 into my house last year; at the time, he gave me a deal on it because it was a new unit that had been 'sitting around the shop for a couple years'. Is there any way to tell how old it actually is? Thanks!

Post the serial number. It is not uncommon for certain sizes/types to be as much as a year old before they are installed. It can be due to the size it is or type of unit. Your warranty goes into effect the day it is installed though not by the manufacture date so even if it was a year old when it was installed, it would not start till it was put in.

Wow...thanks for the quick response. Serial # on this unit: 8612063166, model num GHI115A50. I'm hoping the '86' doesn't mean '1986'...

Believe it or not yes, it is an 86 model. Was it still new in the box or had it been installed before? The GHI115A50's were made between 1986(late 86 were technically 1987 model year) and 1990. If it was new in the box, I would call Amana at (877)254-4729 and see what their warranty policy would be inregards to it. If it was used, I hope he gave you a warranty of some sort.

Well, isn't that interesting :) . My installer had told me it was new and never been installed, but I wasn't around at the time of the installation to see how it was packaged. Not being an expert on furnaces, would it be unreasonable to expect that he would tell me it was 17 years old, or that it had been installed before? Is there any legitimate recourse you think I could take with the vendor? Thanks again!

Well, it could have very well sat in a back corner of the shop under a bunch of stuff. Does your invoice state it was new? As for recourse, check your local laws. He may not of realized it was that old or he could of very well knew and just glad to get it out the door. That part no one can tell you except for the man who sold it to you. Again, call Amana and see what they have to say as to the situation. They would be the ones responsible for it and the dealer. You could also try them via e-mail at CONSUMERAFFAIRS@goodmanmfg.com although your best bet is the Consumer Affairs number previously posted.
