I have a split system central air unit with the condensor outside and the airhandler in the attic. Just a little while ago I noticed that the auxilary heat light was on at the thermostat. Although it is not still as bright as it was it still glows even with the air conditioning running. You can feel warm air mixed in with the cool air at the vents, and it sounds like a the unit is trying to switch off, yet it runs continually, but the condensor is not running at all. I finally thought to trip the breaker for the aux. heat and the light went off, the condensor began running again, and now there is only cold air blowing. What could cause this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Randall

For a test disconect the W2 wire from the back of the thermostat. and see if the heating shuts down.

Thanks for the suggestion Xenos. I disconnected the wire at W2 and the heat did go off, but now a couple days later, I have no sign of life at all at the condensor unit. I have checked all my wires and connections for shorts, but I haven't found any. However, I am curious about a couple of things. When power is put back on the condensor there is no response at all from the contactor. And even when the unit is disconnected should there be continuity at the capacitor? I know I probably need to get the capacitor checked with the right instrument, but it seems odd to me that I had continuity even from the fan to the herm. And when I removed the capacitor from the condensor I still got at least a flash of light from my tester. Also, could you tell me why there is a red light flashing on the defrost control board. Sometimes it flashes a great deal and then stops for a few seconds. Then it flashes fast twice, and then begins flashing a number of times again. There really doesn't seem to be any pattern to it. Am I just fishing in an empty pond, or am I getting a few nibbles? Could it be the contactor, capacitor, or maybe even a bad thermostat? The air handler fan works just fine. Any help would be appreciated before I go spend a lot of money for something that I could fix.

Thanks

Randall

The flashing light is a fault code. On York units “2 = discharge pressure over 400 psig” this would mean you need to clean your unit. Also check the High pressure switch as it may be open.

P.S. the w2 was it at the heat pump or thermostat ? As both problem could be related.

If you disconnected it at the heat pump both problems may have something to do with the defrost board as this board controls the condenser fan and W2 at the same time.

If it was on the thermostat, I gather you need a new one.

I disconnected the W2 at the thermostat. Are you saying that because it disconnected the heat there then the thermostat could be the problem? I'd do back flips if it was, but would that keep the condensor unit from running (no fan, no compressor, no sound whatsoever) when powered up? As to the flashing light it is primarily a continuous flash with a couple quick flashes happening randomly. Also, being a virtual newcomer to servicing my heat pump, I'm not exactly sure where the high pressure switch would be. My condensor unit does have a switchover valve (is this the reversing valve) with a switchover solenoid attached to it. I did check this and it is getting power. My heat pump is a Trane Weathertron XE 1200, model #TWP030C100A3. I've had it for about 9-10 years. Never any problems before now. I guess it's because I had a service contract on it. However, I decided to not renew it this year, and here I am, appreciating greatly any advice you can give me. Thanks for your help.

For a quick test. Jump R to Y, have some one out side to see it the unit starts. If it does you definitely need a new stat.
