A contractor has given me an estimate for both of these companies. Does anyone know anything about them?

Both are vey good. They are considered a contractor grade. Meaning you pay for the quality of the unit and not the millions others spend in marketing. Nordyne, MIller, Frigidaire, Tappan, Gibson, Kelvinator,Philco,Westinghouse are all made by the same company just different warranties and first two model #'s are different. I believe they are owned by Electrolux (aka) GMC

I haven't had any experience with them either. Those names are owned by Nordyne who also makes the Maytag line of HVAC equipment (only available to certain dealers). Here is the website might give you a little more info.
