can static elec ruin a thermostat. it seemed to run the batteries down quickly for the digital read out.

Some thermostats draw power off the 24 volt secondary and the batteries are for backup only in case of a power failure. See if the thermostat was wired for this provision.(you would need the common wire for this) If your backlite is always on and you depend on battery power alone, your battries will run down in short order. If you can't fix this I would disable the backlite.

where's the static coming from? What model T stat is it? If its a 'true static (friction) in the air, it should not have any effect on a thermostat no matter what type.

Could you further explain this static electricity incident? Except for the batteries running down, does the thermostat work? How long does it take for the batteries to run down? Did the thermostat work normally before this incident? Your answers could give us a clue.
