I recently replaced my old Mercury operated regular thermostat for my central gas heat/electric A/C unit with a Honeywell Model RTH5100B Digital manual Thermostat. All the wires were the same color coded (4 wire) as on the old thermostat. I made the correct setting for gas heat and electric a/c. The problem is it would sometimes go down 5-6 degrees below what the heat was set on and apparently it would never kick the heat on until I switched the thermo on and off. It would only do this occasionally and work fine the rest of the time. I took the thermostat back to Lowe's and exchanged it, but the new one is doing the same thing. Anything besides the thermostat that would cause this??? It comes pre-set to a 1 degree differential between room temp and what you set the heat on, and I don't see anything in the instructions to change this. This thermostat was $40 at Lowes, it was th most expensive one they had other than the 5-7 day programmable. Any suggestions????

BJ

Obviously not the tstat but I would look at a faulty relay in the secondary. The fact that it works after exercising it looks like a contact that is making only marginally.
