I have forced air heating & AC in my house, and I am adding an addition. What's the proper placement of the return air grills on the walls. Should they be right at the celing or down somewhat?

Single returns are best just above baseboard (near floor level).
better still is to have a "duo set-up" (one low and one high in the same stud space) and controlled by a leaf type damper in the low grille.(vanes down)
Summer= low grille dampered shut, high is open.
Winter= low grille damper open, thus shutting off high one.
all you need is a grille with a damper for the low, and a damperless grille for the high.
For best results the high one should be within 6" of the ceiling.(vanes up.)

Where is the furnace located?...If in the attic, then return in the ceiling is most cost effective. If it's in the basement and you have access to the new addition then I'd recommend floor. Another cheap option is to do adequate grilles on opposite sides of the common wall from old to new, if it's an enclosed area from the rest of the house.

The furnace is located in the basement, the addition is a new second floor. I'm planning on putting two returns in each room in the wall one high & one low with dampers to to swith depending if I heating or cooling. I was just wondering how high on the wall & how low. A friend told me the high return should be at least 12 inches down from the celing,. But I don't think that makes sense, I think it should be as high as possible. Any thoughts & explanations would be great.

From my limited knowledge, the ruturn air grills are to be seated near the floor; if not in the floor, to move the air out of the room. Different factors could change this but none that I'm aware of...maybe some of the more knowledgeable techs might have other ideas.
