I have a Nordyn electric furnace. My electric bill in December shot up from $158 to $500. I did a test on my home to try and find the kw eater in my home. When I turn the heater on the meter outside -the turning disc- goes crazy. I read the meter before and after turning it on as a test. It used about 3kw in 12 minutes. No wonder my electric bill is so high. My question is, what is causing this? A loose connection with the heater? Also it seems as if all of my electric has gone up. I have been logging my kw usage for 2 days and it looks like i am using between 50-75 kw a day without the heater, dishwasher, or washer dryer. ??? i am perplexed. And going broke, and very cold with no heater on. Any ideas or suggestions?

Sounds strange. 3 kw/12 min = 15kw/hr. I would recommend you get a serviceman in to check your furnace. There are sequencers which can stick and cause trouble as well as it should be serviced annually to check the wiring. A 15 kw unit is not a odd size. Gas meters in my area are checked and replaced periodically for accuracy. Don't know if an electric meter ccan go out of whack. Our elec. company provides some free service (non furnace) and maybe they can help you.

Good Luck

If i used a space heater or radiant heater an it is 1500 watts, how many kw is that per hour?
Say it ran the whole hour.

1000 watts = 1 kw 1500=1.5 kw. You should get the inspection done before calling the elec. co as they probably will ask you to get it done B4 they come out.
