Originally set up as up flow the ac unit was installed on top of the furness. If I convert it to downflow will the ac unit sit on the plenum then the furness?

The upflow model probably cannot be converted to downflow. Post the model number of your furnace for verification.

go to www.bryant.com and look in their search window for your model number. You will find the installation manuel and it will tell you how to convert this unit to a down flow coil.
If they don't find ya handsome nor handy surgery may help!
