"replacng hermostat; nothing to "W" on boiler" , posted Mon 24 Sep 09:49user profileedit/delete messagepost reply

Hi All,
I've been having trouble/questions replacing my old Honeywell mercury thermostat with a ritetemp 8022c to connect to my Burnham Series 2 Gas Boiler (Model # 204NCL-TEi2).

The old Honeywell had only 2 wires, connected ultimately to "R" and "G" on the boiler itself. The wires and connections weren'ty labeled on the thermostat itself. On the boiler, nothing is connected to "W", which seems weird to me...)

Anyway, I want to hook up the ritetemp and add a common connection so as not to rely on battery power, although there's already something connected (via a clip) to "C" on the furnace. This will mean running a new wire but that's ok with me. Now comes the fun part--

My questions:
1) Despite what the rite-temp instructions recommend, should I connect as it seemed to be before--i.e., from "R" to "R" and "G" to "G", with nothing on "W"? Or, should I do what Ritetemp says, i.e., connect "W" to "W" and "RC jumpered to RH" to "R" on the boiler, "C" to "C." Again, nothing was labeled on my old thermostat itself.

2) will there be any problem connecting to "C" on the boiler, even if "C" on the boiler is already got a connection to something else, too? (there's still room on the screw; it's just that the clip is taken up).

Thanks in advance for your help.

The G terminal on your boiler is acting as W.

Stat - Boiler
R - R
W - G
C - C

Verify correct operation after wiring.

Thanks, Houston. Is that normal for G to act as W?

Your probably refering to a fan center installed at the boiler, which uses R and G to power the 120V circulation pump. The pump starts and closes the flow switch and fires the boiler...

341, thanks for the info. Does that mean that it's okay for nothing to be on "G" or should I wire G to G as well?

Clearly I'm a novice. But I appreciate the assistance.

That terminal block is basically a set of wire nuts, the important thing is the wire it connects to. I imagine W is on the wrong terminal boiler side as well.
