I have a Carrier outdoor package unit that is atleast 10 years old. When I use the heater it frequently over-heats and stops blowing heat even though it's still running. Once the unit does this, the only way I can get the unit to turn off is if I turn the electricity off to it and I have to leave the power off for an hour or so to let it cool down. It's overheating more and more and it's also a lot noisier than it used to be. Any ideas on what would fix this?

Sounds to me that the blower for some reason is stopping which will cause the heaters to overheat. becareful of this, this can cause a serious fire if this is not fixed. Stop and either find out the problem or call a certified HVAC contraxtor.
