Replaced a noisy fan motor with a new one for Carrier Condenser. Specs all match on motor and capacitor. Runs quiet now but fan is blowing cool air out of condenser outside rather than hot air like usual. Motor keeps overheating and shutting off. Cools down and repeats...Returned the motor and got a new one and still doing the same thing. Compressor runs fine when I disconnect motor and run it on it's own. Trying to figure out why it's blowing COOL air out of top of condenser and why motor is overheating.

Check motor rotation for correct direction.

Did you replace the capacitor as well?

Now my compressor isn't coming on....... is this from the motor running hot for a few minutes? Can the compressor cool off and come back on? I just hosed it down to help cool it down faster. The motor will run but the compressor won't come on now. The motor is blowing cool air out the top instead of warm and keeps overheating. I've had this overheating problem the last couple days when I replaced the noisy motor, but the whole time, the compressor was fine until now.... oh man, this can't be good. Could this situation possibly be redeemable? It's 10 years old (carrier)When I had the noisy motor to begin with the ac guy said replace it. He said the compressor was fine just a couple days ago!

yes I did.... What would make it blow cool air out of the top of the condenser rather than hot air like usual? It was blowing warm air fine out the top, then I dropped a small screw into the top of the condenser (dumb, I know). Shut it off, turned it back on, now it's blowing cool air out of the top and heating up. Screw hit the fan blade a bit for a second but didn't do anything to it. What would make it blow cool out the top rather than warm?

You short cycled the compressor. Turn it off at the service disconnect or breaker and wash it down with a water hose for 10 minutes.
Or just turn it off for a few hours and allow it to cool.

Cap. MFD is 440 7.5, Motor MFD 7.5 370. Place I got it from and AC guy was out a while back I called and said that would be fine together. Would that cause it to blow cool air out the top rather than warm like it should?

Does your compressor run capacitor appear swollen like the one in the picture.

You were right on that with the compressor. After it cooled off, the compressor comes on now when it's hooked up alone. Hard to tell if it's on when the motor is running, but the air out the top of the condenser is still blowing out cool, not warm and motor overheats and stops within a few minutes. Cap. is not swollen.
Compressor comes on now since cooled Blows cold air from top of condenser, not warm like it should New motor overheats and stops within minutes

Post the RPM, horsepower, and voltage of your new motor. Had a guy post "it is the same as the old one" before and the voltage was wrong.

Called Carrier (model # 38BYB042300) this am to verify all that was on the panel. This is what the panel said, this is what Carrier said and this is what the new motor is:
7.5-370 MFD 825 RPM 208/230 volt 1/5 HP 1 phase
The capacitor is 3 wire 7.5-440- Carrier and the ac guy said this cap. would be fine. Is the 370 mfd on the motor vs. the 440 on the cap. a big deal? thanks again.

If you are blowing cold air out of the motor and the motor is overheating, for sure the air is not flowing over the motor as it should. Your fan is either not tied to the motor shaft and is freewheeling or your condenser coils are mostly blocked or the air flow is short circuiting both the fan motor and the condenser . The test is that regardless of the compressor, when the fan is on you should get suction at the condenser coils and a good flow out of the fan opening at the top. Also the compressor overheating is another indication of no or poor airflow across the condenser. If you can't find this very soon, you had better call in a professional or risk losing a very expensive compressor.

Do you have a 2 wire capacitor (7.5 mfd) with the compressor AND the fan hooked up to one side and 1 wire on the other side of the capacitor? You should have a 3 "terminal" capacitor, like the picture above. One terminal is labeled herm(compressor, one labeled fan, and one is the common wire from the contactor...sounds like the counter guy sold you the capacitor for the fan motor, not the unit. Good luck...john
