I've recently installed a Honeywell RTH7500 on a Lenox Multistage heat pump system. Everything seems to be working correctly with exception of the fact that my Aux heat seems to be running quite a lot. My electric bill the first month with this new thermostat was $100 higher than any past bills I've had.....that with temperatures well below average.
Any ideas why this thermostat engages my aux heat so often?
It was wired using the "Alternate Heat Pump" wiring schema in the Honeywell installation guide.
BTW- I have the schedule setup to remain on only ONE temperature all the time, 70 degrees. I did this in an effort to alleviate the possibility of a 3 degree difference btwn the setting and actual temp....which is what I was told is the criteria for engaging the aux heat.

The possibilities include, miswired stat, misconfigured stat, stuck heat sequencer, heat pump problem outside(refrigerant, capacitor, reversing valve).
A $79 heat check may be cheaper then continued problems.

Thanks Houston 204.
Heat check has been done. Was a little low on freon but they said not enough to cause any issues. They pointed back to the thermostat although they couldn't help other than offering to replace it for me. Eventually I'll replace if necessary but I do have $100 in it right now and would like it to work.
Wiring has been confirmed.
System Type (Function 170) is set to "Multi-Stage Heat Pump". The guide describes this as "Heat pump with backup or auxilliary heating."
Stat Configuration is pretty simple. I guess it's possible I could be missing something but as I described originally, the temps are set the same for all modes of the schedule.
