I did not quite understand Static's instructions on how to do this with my gas furnace. WHERE precisely do I place my thermometer at the furnace for supply air temp measurement? I tried to find this info online but no precise info. Do I place the thermometer right onto or near the plenum or a duct near the plenum?
Thanks again,
Peter S.

Thank you much, acefurnacefxr. My exact question was "WHERE precisely do I place my thermometer?" Your answer is " supply and return, out of sight of blower motor and heat exchanger".
Now, while I agree that this NOT a rocket science, what did you mean exactly?

I have always taken my supply air temp at least 6' away from the furnace in the trunk line. It's nice when the ducts have been cleaned, and there's plastic plugs. You can just slide your thermometer in the plug. If not I just find a drive cleat corner to peal up and I put the thermometer in the duct.

For the return air duct just be aware of a bypass humidifer that could falsify the return air temperature.

Much appreciated answer, hvactechgroup! I was getting the impression, that it is a highly secret piece of info. Thank you,
Peter S.

Not really a secret of the HVAC group, every install manual covers this topic, and the rating plate on every unit tells you the spec's to meet on your temperture rise.
