My Rheem unit has downflow filters, but I am unable to access them. Connected to the top of the furnace is duct work that reaches to the ceiling. The duct work is sealed, screwed, bolted, etc. all the way around and up.

The only conceivable access point is via an April Aire 550 cover about 2 feet up the duct work atop the furnace. When opened, I can peer down into the duct work to see the down flow filters. But, they are too far down to reach. And even if I could reach them, there's no way they would fit through the small cover opening.

The home is 10 years old and I've been here for 4 years. I doubt the filters have ever been changed (certainly not since I've been here), since there's no way to get at them. Do I need to tear out the duct work?? And if you are supposed to change the filters monthly, am I suppposed to rip out the duct work every time?

What am I missing here? My house gets dusty very quickly and I see residue powder inside the cover by the burners. I would imagine that this is due to the dirty filters. There is no Carbon Monoxide present.

Thanks

Some economy installations on the downflows require you to take the top door off and there may be a "V" rack that they are resting on. Just reach up from inside cabinet and lift them out at an angle. Make sure the new ones are properly seated afterwards. I don't install them that way, but I'm sure some do.

I'll give it a shot this weekend, but I don't recall seeing any way to reach up there when I had the cover off the other day changing out the hot surface ignitor.

If interested, I'll reply this weekend with what I find. Thanks for your suggestion.
