Just bought a house with a 4 year old Trane gas furnace (two actually, one in the crawl space of an addition). While in the furnace room in the basement last night, I noticed a heavy breeze I could feel from across the room while the furnace was blowing. It seems a good deal of air is leaking at the joint where the main rectangular duct (roughly 2'x2') is attached to the top of the furnace. All the other penetrations in that duct are sealed with mastic. Should this be taped or sealed as well? Any reason they would neglect that on install?

One more quick one: the old part of the house has a really cold room (our 2 year old's!). Blocking off two main wall vents on the 1st floor seems to warm it up very well, but they don't have dampers or any other means of control. I've tried the magnetic sheets; they don't stick. Currently I use cardboard and wire. Anyone have a better solution?

Thanks,

-JDS

I usually lift the floor vents out and block them from upstream that way the air pushes the rag or whatever against it. As far as the spot where the plennum attaches to the furnace there is not reason not to tape it up.
