Need advice please, Is it normal for this furnace to ignite run for 30 seconds or somtimes a minute or two and then the burner shuts down? Then after about the same time kicks in agian and runs the same untill the house temp reaches the desired temp. Is this normal for this furnace??? My fan continues to run circulating the air because I have an air cleaner running all the time. thanks in advance Ron.

sounds like it's dropping out the burners on high limit. Dirty filters, dirty cooling coil could be causing it, if it was working fine before.

Well it's been running like this for a while now, I thought that could have been normal but it sounds like it is not the way this unit should run. So your suggesting that the secondary cooling/heat exchanger fins could be dirty? I know the air filters are ok. If I pull the blower out and the fins appear to be clean then the next step would be to suspect the high limit temp controller....is this an expensive part to replace? do you know? thanks Ron

if the secondary is clean, then you need to do a temperature across from return to supply...there should be somewhere around 45 to 70 difference...your furnace label should tell you the exact number. Limits don't go bad very often, but if the temp is in the norm, it could be a bad limit. I would think a limit would be under 50 bucks here. Prices vary in different sections of the country. If you have air conditioning and your system is an upflow, you may need to take a mirror and inspect the underside of your indoor coil, also.

another thought is, do you have a digital t-stat?...if so, disregard. If it's non digital, the heat anticipator could be set wrong.

As a matter of fact I do have a digital t-stat it's a honeywell and looks like its older. I have no info on how to set it up. I just pulled the blower out of the furnace and checked the fins they were a little bit dusty but you could still see through them except for the far corners where there was some build up, but it's all gone now and the system is still running the same way. It can maintain house temp but when it gets real cold like today it tends to drop and can't keep up.
