I am a service tech of 9 years, started in California in the Seet Metal Workers Union. Moved To N. Carolina 2 years ago. Anyway. I am with a new employer now for 3 mos. Last week I went to do a maintenance for a new customer. I went into the crawl and the Carrier Furnace 90+ 9 yrs. old was rumbling, had a bouncing flame as well as yellow. The inducer was making a splashing and popping sound, loud enough to hear outside! I informed the customer that all the symptoms were there for a cracked secondary. They called another company out and the disagree, they claim the trap is installed incorrectly from day 1 and the Heat Exchanger is fine. Now the customer thinks I was trying to take advantage of them and sell them a new American Standard Furnace. (Rather than just change out the heat exchanger, which is horizontal and against the floor joists and the ground). When I was in my apprenticship they informed us that any snapping and popping in a BDP Condesating furnace was a cracked heat exchanger indication. I used to have a letter from Carrier addressing the issue blaming it on not supporting the center of the furnace. Now I no longer have that letter and I want so bad to prove that I am right. Now my Credability depends on what the 3rd Company comes out and says (at least to the customer). So any literature about the known issues would be great. Not a job threatening issue, more of a pride thing and now. Thanks, Justin

Justin

Is this the mav series? Most likely the noise is water in the inducer, with high chance of water in the collector also. Plugged trap or drain most likely the cause. Incorrectly installed trap most likely would have shown up first year of operation, could be drain hoses collapsing from age and the reason someone else said incorrect install. The water in the inducer will cause odd burning and probably should check gas manifold pressure along with a temperature rise. Crude installs are vicious.
