Hi,

I have a Comfortmaker (ICP) RPJ II forced air gas furnace. When my thermostat calls for heat, the heat coil glows orange but shuts off before the gas can be ignited.

I had a couple of HVAC technicians supposedly diagnose the problem and provide an estimate for repair. The first obviously didn't know what he was doing and responded with "it could be this, or it may be this or...let me call the manufacturer". The second tried to sell me on a completely new unit.

What is the best way to find an honest, capable, reasonable HVAC technician?

I'm in Ashburn, VA (near Dulles International Airport).

Thanks!

Unfortunately, HVAC as well as any other trade is plagued with incompetence. But, there are also a lot of talented, caring folks out there too. Finding them is sometimes difficult. You can try asking friends, or neighbors, and see who they use. But still, unless it's a one man operation, it's luck of the draw as far as who comes to your door. The company I work for has 7 technicians - you would only want three of them in your home... sad.
