Hey - I could really use some help with the issues I've had since the August 2007 installation of a York Affinity heat pump (YZB), a York two-stage furnace (PT9) and a York (White-Rodgers) programmable t-stat. Any advice you can offer is so appreciated. The issues may be due to several problems, rather than one, but here goes ...

The contractor has been out multiple times, and issues remain.

(1) Since day one, the t-stat shows flashing red LED and the LCD displays "check system" every time the higher stage of the furnace is called-whether the HP calls it or the first-stage furnace calls it when I'm in EMER mode. Dealer says ghost voltage and wants to disconnect X/L. I say something's wired incorrectly and X/L should work fine if all's installed correctly.

(2) The t-stat wiring is yellow on Y1 connecting to Y2/Y on furnace. Installation manuals show Y1 to Y1! Why did installer not use instructions that came with equipment, and isn't this enough to cause the "check system" to appear?!

(3) HP defrost seems to occur just about every time the HP cycles on and this doesn't seem right, either.

(4) I haven't even used the HP for weeks now because until they corrected the position of the bonnet sensor (which they first installed in the plenum rather than in the coils) it was running simultaneously with the furnace in higher stage for 10 minutes at a time- and almost every time it cycled on! Once they corrected the bonnet sensor location I noticed the following performance and never used the HP again for fear of damage:

Outside temp is 48 degrees.
Inside temp is 64 degrees.
T-stat is set at 64 degrees.

1- HP comes on for just a few minutes (wasn't watching clock THIS time but seems around 3-5 minutes?)

2- Loud noise outdoors from HP (compressor? defrost?) I think fan stops, but not watching that closely this time. Seen it often on prior occasions, though.

3- Furnace is running second stage for only a minute or two.

4- Furnace returns to green (not running).

5- HP on.

6- Furnace goes back to second stage! There has been a lapse of only a minute or two.

7- HP running simultaneously with second stage.

8- After a couple minutes, all components quit running. T-stat temp is satisfied, I presume.

Questions:

1 - Are we sure that HP defrosts after only a couple minutes when it is 48 degrees outside? Seems very odd.

2- Why did 2nd stage furnace come on, go off, then come right back on in the span of only a minute or two?

Heat pump operation sounds wrong.

The outdoor control board in the YZB heat pump controls the staging of your gas furnace. He probably has it wired wrong.

I gave a slightly more detailed answer in the residential post.

Bubbad, thank you very much. Having looked and looked for info on this forum, I was so glad you responded, since I see your replies often on the forum.

I know I'll have more q's about my equipment very soon. Still trying to get dealer to install it correctly, then I would like to concentrate on making sure it's set optimally. (T-stat user settings menu and installation settings menu)

Thanks again - they are coming out to check the wiring and other punch list items.

p.s. I'm going to post henceforth on the Residential forum rather than the general discussion section.
