Trane is one of the more reliable systems available (Rated #1 overall in the 2007 JD Power HVAC subcontractor survey). Lennox is very expensive to repair should a breakdown occur(huge mark-up on their OEM parts) and depending on the area you live in, finding replacement parts in a timely fashion could be an issue. A lot of techs I know simply hate working on Lennox systems; they're somewhat complicated for inexperienced service people; still others yet won't even work on a Lennox at all...they'll refer you elsewhere because they don't want the anticipated headache. Take into consideration what type of manufacturer's warranty comes with the system as well as available extended labor warranties and associated cost of these warranties. Most importantly, ANY system will not operate as designed if it is not installed properly, so WHO installs it is just as important as WHAT is installed. Check the contractor's references and ask for prior customer referrals. A poor installation job can result in even the best rated system to operate poorly. Lastly, I've heard of some performance issues with Bryant heat pump systems in our area (Colorado) from people in the industry who install their brand. Bryant is made by Carrier, which in recent years has NOT received good reviews from HVAC contractors. Gibson is not a brand that I'd recommend either. I don't think you can go wrong with Trane, so long as the installation job is done properly.
