I was hoping someone could help me with a question regarding an old Carrier 40AQ heat pump and air con. unit. My issue is that when I first start her up to heat the house it does great but after an hour or two it starts to loose heat output bit by bit then the compressor takes what sounds like a long sneeze and belches steam out of the outdoor fan and compressor unit! Then the compressor is quieter but builds up to it's original noise level. Any help would be great. Thank you.

That is the defrost control at work.
The evaporator coil starts to freeze, so the heat pump reverses the reversing valve position (and should turn off the outdoor fan) to defrost.
It should also energize your electric heat strips when this occurs to help compensate for the fact that it switches to cool mode to defrost.
"Tip of the Day" Remember to remove power first.
