I have an old 2.5 ton Nordyne heat pump. The freeze-up of the unit is diagnosed to be due a faulty circuit board with a replacement cost of the board of about $500. Thus I am planning to replace the entire system with new instead of repair of existing. A new 2.5 ton, 13 seer Goodman system price (the condenser and air handler plus heat strip)shipped is published by different sellers at about $1800. The installation cost is estimated at $1000. Thus a new Goodman installed can be as low as $2800. Other manufacturer unit (such as Trane, Career, Payne,...) prices are not readily published (or I am not aware how to obtain them). However, a Trane dealer HVAC company gave me an estimate of about $6000. for the replacement of my unit with Trane. Is the Price difference justified by quality difference. What is your overall opinion about lower end systems? How much the labor and material of complete and professional installation (excluding unit prices)of a 2.5 ton heat pump (inside and out side replacement) should cost?

I would not put a goodman unit in. The goodman heat pumps are made so cheap compared to a Trane, its not even close. I have to work on a lot more new goodman units than trane. I think it would be worth the money to install trane equipment.

Most techs including myself will not install equipment purchased by the home owner. I also thought that Goodman's warranty does not apply if equipment is bought over the net. If I Install a piece of equipment and it is DOA the the manufacture would pay for my labour.
Be careful sometimes you don't get a second chance
