I have Crane gas furnace from the 70's. With the thermostat in the off position. I turn the gas valve to pilot and lite it wait for 1 mimute. When I turn the gas valve to the on position the heater fires up, like it does when it is running but without the blower fan on. Does this appear to be a defective gas valve? In normal operation I would turn the pilot to the on position then turn the thermostat to on and it would kick on in a few minutes.

Can't rule the gas valve out but it could be a short in the low voltage wiring or a bad t-stat.

If in doubt call a pro !

try cleaning the pilot assembly install new t-couple and relighting the furnace after that turn the valve to the on poistion and start the furnace while the fan is running turn the vavle to pilot if the pilot goes out you have 2 thing going agaist you one the pluger in the vavle is weak or you have a bad heatexchanger need to have unit checked buy a pro and you mite want to start saving some money cause something that old needs replaced instead of being repaied better to be safe than sorry
