I have a Heil 5000 unit gas furnace (model NTC5125BKA1) that quit working tonight. It appears the pilot light ignites, but the main gas tubes do not. The pilot just keeps lighting every 10 seconds in an attempt to start the burners. Gas is flowing to the pilot. Any ideas on what the problem may be??

Thanks,
Cold in Nashville

Addendum: Thursday AM, The unit started again this am after I turned the thermostat to 'off' last night and the pilot light knob to 'off' also. Turned both on today and the burners started off the pilot as they should. I suspect this is a sign of an impending module failure. Would this be due to the Honeywell valve control to the gas intake? Does it often need replacing in this situation or some type of cleaning?

Thanks again,
No longer so cold. (I've got a good wood-burning fireplace as back-up!)

Does this model have a Honeywell Smartvalve ignition system with an ignitor/flame rod assembly? (3 thin wires that run from the pilot assembly and plug into the gas valve). If it does, the flame sensor may be dirty. Usually just best to replace the ignitor assembly than trying to clean between the flame rod and ignitor. It can be done, but wouldn't recommend trying unless you're really careful as to not break the ignitor. Can be a bear to get to in most furnaces. It's also possible the valve is bad like March said, but without the means to test it, I'd try cleaning the sensor first. These valves are pricy. If you just need an ignitor/flamerod assembly, you can find these for around $20-30.

If it is a Honeywell smart valve then Yes it is probably a bad valve. What is the model# of the valve.

Be careful sometimes you don't get a second chance
