Change filters monthly but filters appear black as soot. A company came and tested the walls, ductwork and it is soot. Have gas logs but they aren't used. Have changed the filters up to 3 times a week. They are black with soot. Happened once 6 years ago. I replaced ducts and furnace (gas powered). Washed, painted (Kilz) all walls and ceilings. Happened again 20 months ago, replaced carpet, repainted, and its back. When changing the filters you can see the soot around the rim of filter. I'm now changing the filters twice a week. Any ideas from anyone? I've had 2 different companies ck system, indicate ok.

Yes, Knighofthebass
You said "A company came and tested the walls, ductwork and it is soot.". When you said "tested". What tests were preformed? Look up HVAC Title 24 Was one a duct leak percentage test?
You said "I replaced ducts and furnace (gas powered)". Do you mean you had a total system change out including new ducts(exhaust), and new gas funcace? What about your evaporator unit and condensing unit? Do you have cooling?
you said "I've had 2 different companies ck system, indicate ok." GREAT!

you replace the furnace 6 years ago with a "gas powered" one is this lp or natural gas? or are you burning oil? soot is a product of poor combustion, to much fuel not enough air. as asked above, what else are you burning in the house. do you have fresh air intake on you duct? any co detectors?

Do you burn a lot of candles, oil lamps, kerosene heaters or anything like that?
If in doubt call a pro !

What TOM said....
We have a house in our area that has had this similar issue for years, unsolved mystery, beyond the scope of hvac techs investigation... But the one thing i mentioned to the customer after recommending to them to have a indoor air expert(enviromental testing) come in to analyze the house was that i felt her close proximity to the railway yard and a busy intersection that the big tractor trailers use was probably something to consider...
